Choosing Your Social Media Manager

In the era of time we are in now social media is nearly impossible to ignore. Especially if you are a business owner or a leader of an organization. And although most of us use social media frequently, it does take a special someone to use social media effectively for someone else. Those that understand

this concept also understand that the best choice is to hire a professional, but that is not always feasible for all organizations. If that is you, it is important that you choose the right person for the job when choosing an employee or volunteer to manage your social media pages. Keep reading and you will learn

about what you should be looking for when choosing who will be your social media manager.

Experience with Social Media Platforms

First things first, you want whoever you choose to have at least some base knowledge of social media. It’s hard to manage a page if you don’t even know how to login and make a post. As mentioned early, most of us use at least one social media platform so that task shouldn’t be as hard as you think. But if for some strange reason there is no one in your organization that knows how to use social media, there are plenty of resources online.

Good Communication

Social media management is all about communicating your organizations message, goals, values, and what you have to offer to the world. So it is important that your social media manager has good communications both verbally and written. Remember your social media platforms are a reflection

of you and how you run your organization. Consider having them use tools like Grammarly.com to check for spelling and grammar errors or have someone check their work before posting. Business suite allows you to save posts as drafts so someone else could go in to double check work.

Knowledgeable About Your Organization

You want your social media manager to be able to clearly relay your message to your followers. Also, a lot of social media management is about answering questions and responding to inquiries and comments. If your social media manager doesn’t know the ins and outs of your organization, it will be hard for them to be able to respond in a timely matter. Also, you want them to be able to speak in the organizations voice. If the tone and voice of your organization is fun, quirky, and playful, it might not be the best idea to choose a person with a very serious and stern personality.

Great Customer Service

As mentioned, a big part of managing a social media page is dealing with followers whether that be a pleasant or not so pleasant experience. Unfortunately, it is impossible to please everybody and make everybody happy. But as a professional it is our job to respond to the negativity in a positive

manner. A good social media manager is one who can respond in a positive way and flip the negative situation into a good one. It’s probably not the best idea to choose the person on the team that has a “hot head” or the person with no filter to be in charge of your social media.

Decent Understanding of Technology

Lastly, it is imperative that your social media manager have a base knowledge of technology. Even though social media can most certainly be managed on a laptop or desktop, it is far easier to be able to manage it on the go via social media. If your organization is having an event, you want to be able to go live or post photos on the spot to get people to come. Having to take photos with a camera and then go back to the office and post later on is not always efficient. Also, these days, social media is way more than just writing a paragraph of information. You have to be able to incorporate things like images, videos, reels, stories, etc. to be able to not only capture your audience’s attention but to also keep it.

Hopefully you have a better understanding of what qualities are needed to be a good social media manager. This list can be very helpful to keep in mind when choosing a person to fill the role in your organization.
