Whenever someone has an event, the first thing they want to do is make a flyer, and there is nothing wrong with that. Flyers can be very useful for posting around town, mailing, or giving out door to door. But where people mess up is that they also want to post that flyer on social media. Although this may have been a trend in the past, with the evolution of social media, this is no longer the best way to use your flyers for many reasons. Here are some more things to know and some things about using flyers on social media.
Social Media Posts Should Be Appealing to the Eye
Usually when we are on social media, we are just scrolling along until something catches our eye. Most people try to put as much information on the flyers as possible making them overwhelming at a first glance due to all of the words and information on them. When it comes to marketing on social media, you want something simple that is going to pop out to your audience. Then once you have their attention you can then get your message across with information.
Many times you also want to be able to have a call to action for them to go get more information, visit your website, or even sign up or RSVP. If you have a flyer inundated with information they probably won’t read it all and, if they do, they will probably keep scrolling and eventually go down the social media rabbit hole and forget they even read it. And that’s just not good for business.
QR Codes
Another mistake people make is posting flyers with QR codes. Yes, if you are the type to sit around on the computer all day looking at your socials then that might work. But let’s be honest. Most people are on their phones when they are scrolling. Therefore, scanning a QR code is impossible.
Technology hasn’t gotten that good yet. Once someone tries to take an action and are unable to…most of the time you have lost their interest for good.
Flyers Don’t Always Fit
When it comes to social media platforms, each one is different. What works for Facebook doesn’t work for Instagram because the aspect ratio of Instagram posts is 1:1. So while posting an 8.5x11 flyer is possible on Instagram, your text will be cut off or too small to read if you try to fit that size into an Instagram post. The reader will be forced to try to zoom in to see it, and most people are not going to take the time. Also, you can also only post 72 characters before the famous “read more” appears. This is more proof Instagram is a visual platform. It was made for square photos and short catchy captions to stop someone from scrolling long enough for them to gain interest and view the full post. Also if you decide to boost your post or run an ad, you have to take into consideration several sizes for feed ads, banner ads, right and left column ads, etc. 8 ½ x 11 flyers won’t fit into most of these ad spaces. Facebook’s algorithms are extremely smart. It tracks whether things are high or low performers.
So they already know flyers are low performers which puts you behind automatically.
Use a Captivating Image or Video
If you do want to promote your event or information on Facebook, try using a captivating image first and then post information in your post. If you have done the event before, a fun photo from the previous event works perfect! Also, videos, stories, and reels are some of the best performers. Think outside the box and make a video or post using material from a previous year. If it’s the first year, you can put together a video from things leading up to the event such as: you decorating, stuffing goodie bags, passing out flyers, etc.
Make an Event
Instead of posting a flyer try using a Facebook event page instead. They can be very useful. Not only can you gauge interest, but people can click to show interest. That way they are able to engage directly with the organizers by asking questions and staying in the loop with your event so that it doesn’t get lost in the hundreds of other advertisements they see each day. They will get a personal notification anytime you make an update or post in the event page. So you will be right in their notifications versus just praying that they visit your page to see it or run across it their timeline.
