Social Media Keeps Me Informed of Community Events

According to the Pew Research Center, about two thirds of adults get their news from social media. So, it is safe to say that people are not getting news from a newspaper or bulletin or even email, and social media could be the most likely place that important news would be conveyed.

In today’s technologically advanced society, social media is often the easiest means of communicating information to large amounts of people. Many adults spend a lot of time on social media to keep up with friends and family or shop, especially since the pandemic began. We have our meetings on Zoom or Google Meet. We shop on Amazon, Wal-Mart.com , and many other stores online. We look for houses and cars online. We entertain ourselves online and especially with social media. Since the

pandemic has started, there are record breaking numbers who are online at any given time. We are glued to our screens for school, work, and day to day communication. Since we spend so much time perusing social media anyway, it makes sense to seek out news and information there as well. Even our president uses social media daily, so there is a lot that can be gleaned from one’s social media pages. Social media is such an integrated part of daily lives.

I follow the pages of the neighborhood in which I live and those who work in it on Facebook. Since I look at Facebook every day to promote for my business, it is very likely that I will see the posts and pictures that pertain to my community. There have been many times that I have found out about events that were helpful for my children, such as back to school drives and Girl Scout meetings. We found out about interest meetings for field trips with the CEO, which was a unique experience for them. My

children had the opportunity to visit places that would not have. There have also been times when we found out emergency information, such evacuation notices or flood warnings from social media posts about this area. Platforms like social media allow for quick communication as well. If an idea needs to be conveyed at the last minute, it can be effective because most people get notifications when something important to them posts.

Social media even gives you the ability to read the newspaper on it. Social media gives you the option to pick what you want to see, it makes me feel more of control of the news I want to see and when I want to see it. I

don’t have to be concerned that I will miss something because I am not bound by time constraints. It also allows people to comment on each post which deepens the sense of community. I like seeing what others in my community are doing as well. The social media page for my community shows the achievements of others and helps others know what they may also be able to achieve. I get to stay up to date frequently and easily.

Overall, social media keeps me informed by being available when and how I need it to be. It will inform me of news that is happening whether I look for it or not. All I have to do is log into my social media account and scroll. Social media informs me about what’s going on with a post. Being informed of what’s going on in my community is convenient and instant when it is done by social media.
