Using Flyers to Communicate

As a housing authority professional, getting information out to your residents can sometimes be challenging for many reasons. For example, you may notice that with lower income populations keeping the same phone number can be challenging due to trouble paying bills consistently. Also, people moving often due to a change in family size or other factors. Especially if

you are in the agency’s upper management and work with residents in several housing communities. A resident may live in more than one of your community’s over a course of a couple years. So how can you stay in touch and update them with all these factors in place. Flyers can be a great tool for communicating effectively.

Here are a few reasons you should start utilizing flyers more often.

It's better than phone calls or texts

Sometimes people don’t want to be bothered by phone, especially if they are having a busy day or have kids. At the end of the day most people just want peace and quiet. Also, people are weary of answering numbers they don’t know or 1800 numbers. Also, people are inundated with calls and texts from scammers all day long. If your office or organization’s phone number is not

saved in their phone, you might not even be able to get someone to answer or even open your text message. But if you leave a flyer on their door, they have no option but to at least pick it up and glance at it to get in their door. People tend to visit their leasing office at least once a month around rent time. Posting flyers at your leasing office forces the flyers to be in their line of site when they

come.

One Line of Communication is Not Enough

Don’t get us wrong, only using flyers is not going to do the job. To have the highest rate of success you need to use several forms of communication. Everyone is different. Everyone prefers their communication in different ways. People that are in an older age group are probably aren’t in love with texting. So sending a letter in the mail might be a better fit for them. While someone that

is between the ages of 18-25 might never check their mail. Understand that your audience is made up of a lot of different aspects. So Use at least 2-3 different avenues of communication, but please consider including flyers!

They’re Appealing

The first step in a sale, or in this case, getting a resident to engage is getting the reader’s attention. You will never be able to get your message across if you can’t get someone to stop and even look! This is where flyers can be really helpful. If someone is walking along minding their business, and an eye-catching and colorful flyer gets their attention, you’re already ahead of the crowd. Make sure you always make your flyers appealing. If you know your organization needs to

utilize flyers frequently, don’t be afraid to seek help from a professional because if your flyers are dull, you might be just be wasting paper!
